What if Facebook
turned off tomorrow?

A study of digital visibility in the Mauritius driving school industry β€” and why 64% of schools would effectively disappear from the internet overnight.

Published by AutoEcole.muΒ·Part of the Seed.mu ecosystemΒ·Data: July–August 2026

The Question

A thought experiment with real consequences

Facebook has gone down before. In October 2021, it was offline for six hours. In that window, every business that relied solely on a Facebook page β€” for their phone number, their opening hours, their customer enquiries β€” was completely unreachable.

For most industries, that is an inconvenience. For a driving school in Mauritius, where a learner might be trying to book their first lesson or confirm a test-day appointment, it is a direct loss of business.

If Facebook turned off tomorrow, would your school still be found?

For 42% of driving schools in Mauritius, the honest answer is no. Their entire digital presence lives on a Facebook page. No website. No directory listing. No Google Business Profile. Just a Facebook URL that, if the platform disappeared, would take their visibility with it.

This is not a hypothetical risk. It is the current state of the industry. And it is exactly the kind of vulnerability that structured digital presence β€” a listing on a directory, a verified profile, a searchable page β€” is designed to prevent.

The Data

55 schools audited. The results are clear.

AutoEcole.mu mapped the digital presence of 55 driving schools and instructors across Mauritius β€” every region, every licence category.

The gap by category: Motorcycle schools are the most vulnerable β€” 70% have no dedicated website. Heavy vehicle training has zero web presence across both audited schools. The central plateau has the highest concentration of Facebook-only schools.

What Google AI recommends when you search for a driving instructor

We ran the query "find me the best driving instructor in Mauritius" in Google AI Mode β€” the new AI-powered search layer that generates direct answers instead of blue links. The AI returned a ranked table of four schools.

The key observation: Only 1 of the 4 schools Google AI recommended has a fully structured digital presence. The other 3 are surfaced despite their limited presence β€” but a learner who clicks through cannot easily find, contact, or verify them.

What the AI also told learners

01

Match your test centre

Ensure your instructor trains on the actual paths used by the inspection centre assigned to your Carnet d'Apprentissage. Different test centres use different routes.

02

Clarify fees upfront

Sessions range from Rs 300 to Rs 700 per hour. Some schools charge an upfront non-refundable enrolment fee of Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000. Confirm whether the vehicle rental for test day is included.

03

Confirm the transmission type

Passing your test on an automatic car restricts your licence to automatic vehicles only. If you want a full unrestricted licence, learn on a manual.

The Solution

How to be found when it counts β€” even if Facebook disappears

A structured digital presence does not require a complex website or a marketing budget. It requires three things: a searchable listing, verified contact information, and a consistent presence across the platforms that AI search engines read.

1

Get listed on AutoEcole.mu

A directory listing gives your school a searchable page with your name, region, category, phone number, and instructor details β€” indexed by Google, readable by AI. Takes 2 minutes. No website required.

List your school β†’
2

Claim your listing on Directories.mu

A verified listing on Directories.mu gives your school a structured profile in the Mauritius business registry β€” the source that AI search engines trust most. Claiming is free.

3

Add your instructor names and contact details

The Google AI result named instructors by name. Named, structured information is what AI reads and cites. A Facebook page with no structured data is invisible to AI search.

Update your listing β†’

The bottom line: Facebook is a channel, not a foundation. A driving school that exists only on Facebook is one algorithm change, one account suspension, or one platform outage away from disappearing entirely. A listing on AutoEcole.mu and a verified profile on Directories.mu is the foundation that makes you findable everywhere β€” including Google AI Mode.

For School Owners

Is your school listed?

Getting listed on AutoEcole.mu takes two minutes. No website required. From Rs 290/month for full visibility.
