Application in brief
Apply for a provisional learner’s licence before learning to drive a motorcar, motorcycle or autocycle. The official routes are the government online service or a police station; after the application stage, prepare for the computerised audio-visual test on road signs, road rules and traffic signals.
Use the official service to confirm the live route, appointment availability and requirements for your individual application. This guide helps you prepare, but it does not replace the Licensing Office’s instructions.
Choose the official application route
The Mauritius Police Force says a provisional driving licence can be applied for online through government services or at a police station. The Government Online Centre lists “Apply for a Learner’s License” among its e-services.
Online applicants choose a convenient date and time to complete processing with the Licensing Office. The official service—not AutoEcole.mu—remains the source of truth for availability and application status.
Prepare the documents before you apply
The official lists include a birth certificate, National Identity Card or student pass where applicable, and civil-status or immigration documents where relevant. The Traffic Branch page also lists proof of address and passport photographs for the online process.
Because the document list can depend on the applicant’s status, use this as a preparation checklist rather than a final instruction. Confirm the live requirements before travelling to the Licensing Office.
- Birth certificate
- National Identity Card or student pass, as applicable
- Proof of address and recent photographs where requested
- Marriage certificate, work or residence permit, and passport where applicable
If you are under 18
The official helpdesk says an applicant under 18 should attend with a responsible party and that person’s National Identity Card. It also notes that applicants over 60 should produce a medical certificate confirming fitness to drive.
